Australia: Barrier Reef Islands Tour

Itinerary Highlights:

DAY 1-Sydney/Coffs Harbour
Enjoy a scenic drive to Port Macquarie, an historic town dating back to the days of convict penal settlement. Visit the fascinating Koala Hospital and Study Centre, then travel through Nambucca Heads to Coffs Harbour, surrounded by banana plantations.

DAY 2- Byron Bay/Gold Coast/Surfers Paradise
Travel through Grafton to Byron Bay, famous for its relaxing lifestyle and idyllic climate. Nearby Cape Byron marks the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. Continue on to Coolangatta, gateway to the fabulous Gold Coast.

DAY 3- Brisbane/Sunshine Coast/Noosa/Fraser Island
Travel to Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. Journey north passing the Glass House Mountains on your way to the exclusive Sunshine Coast, a picturesque string of beaches stretching 40 miles. Visit Noosa Heads, renowned for its natural beauty and quaint sidewalk cafes; then on to Hervey Bay for transfer to Fraser Island and the stunning Kingfisher Bay Resort.

DAY 4-Fraser Island
Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world on the World Heritage List, is an island of contrasts. Tour the island in a 4 wheel drive vehicle along Seventy Five Mile Beach. Visit Eli Creek which pours more than 32 million gallons of sparkling clear water an hour into the Pacific. See the historic Maheno shipwreck and Lake McKenzie, one of the island’s famous freshwater lakes.

DAY 5-Rockhampton
Enjoy an early morning ranger-escorted bird-watching walk and watch for whales as you cruise back to the mainland.

DAY 6-Mackay/Hamilton Island
Travel to Mackay, Australia’s sugar capital, before continuing through Airlie Beach for the cruise to Hamilton Island. Your apartment-style units overlook Catseye Beach and the Whitsunday passage.

DAY 7-Whitsunday Island
Awaken to the magnificent views of the Whitsundays and meet the friendly cockatoos as they land on your balcony. Explore Hamilton at your leisure before joining a cruise to Whitsunday Island. Here is one of the world’s most spectacular beaches, Whitehaven.

DAY 8-Daydream Island/Townsville/Dunk Island
Join a cruise through the Whitsunday Passage to Daydream Island. Enjoy time at leisure on this beautiful island before returning to Shute Harbour. Continue north via the mango-growing region of Bowen to Townsville and Mission Beach. Upon arrival, transfer to Dunk Island, one of the most beautiful Barrier Reef Islands.

DAY 9-Dunk Island
Enjoy the day at leisure or join a guided nature walk to view the array of orchids and native flowers, then take a stroll through the rainforest in search of the blue Ulysses butterfly, walk to the highest peak, Mt. Kootaloo, or cruise the family group of islands.

DAY 10-Millaa Millaa Falls/Mossman Gorge/ Port Douglas
Return to the mainland and continue our journey via Innisfail to the Atherton Table lands. Visit Millaa Millaa Falls, then travel through Mareeba to beautiful Mossman Gorge in Daintree National Park. Stroll through the lush rainforest to the swinging bridge before arriving in Port Douglas, which boasts of exclusive resorts and golden palm-fringed beaches.

DAY 11-Rainforestation Skyrail Cableway/Cairns
Follow the scenic coastline before turning inland to Rainforestation. Witness the dance of the Pamagirri Aboriginal people during their brilliant performance in the rainforest amphitheatre. Join a guided Dreamtime Walk and visit the unique wildlife enclosure for a chance to have your photo taken with a koala. Board the Skyrail Cableway for your journey above the World Heritage rainforest. Continue to Cairns, taking in the city sights on arrival.

DAY 12-Fitzroy Island/Outer Barrier Reef Cruise/Coral Viewing
Cruise to Fitzroy Island, a superb National Park island surrounded by coral reef. Relax on the white coral beach or join a guided rainforest walk. Continue on to Moore Reef on the true Outer Barrier Reef. Swim and snorkel or join the sub-sea viewer for an underwater adventure through the colorful corals and marine life of the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 13-Kuranda Rail/Lake Barrine/Atherton Tablelands
Join the scenic Kuranda Train as it makes its way up the mountain range to Kuranda. Browse through the many art and craft stalls of the famous Kuranda Markets before touring the Atherton Tablelands. Visit the Curtain Fig Tree and enjoy a private wildlife cruise on Lake Barrine.

DAY 14-Cairns
Enjoy leisure time before transfer to the Cairns airport for your return flight.
