DAY 3- Cerro de la Muerte
We will have an early morning breakfast and depart on the two hour hike to the Savegre Waterfall. On the way, your guide will seek out birds such as the Resplendent quetzal, Acorn woodpecker, Collared trogon, and Flame colored tanager. The 300 foot Savegre Waterfall cascades into a pool, where, if you don’t mind the cold water, you can take a dip. Picnic lunch on the bank of the river. After lunch, return to the lodge where you will have the rest of the afternoon free to take a horseback riding trip, go trout fishing, or just relax. (Afternoon tours are an additional cost.Overnight Savegre Mountain Lodge. (BLD) (SG)
DAY 4-Savegre / Corcovado
After breakfast, depart Savegre Mountain Lodge with your guide at 7 a.m. for the 8 hour (includes 1-1/2 hour lunch stop en route) drive south, to Carate. On the way, you will pass through pineapple plantations, and cross the Rio General. Lunch will be at a typical Costa Rican restaurant. Upon arrival in Carate at approximately 3 p.m., Corcovado Lodge staff will be waiting with a cool drink. From here walk 30-45 minutes along the beach (luggage will be transported by horse cart) to the Lodge where you will check in just in time to catch the sun set from the front porch of your tent. Dinner and overnight at Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp.(BLD) (SG)
In groups of up to 6 participants at a time you will visit the Tree Canopy Platform some time today. The 4-hour tour starts with a safety talk given at the Lodge by your Platform Guide. The adventure begins with a one-hour guided hike through the Corcovado Lodge Private Nature Reserve to the Canopy Platform. The Platform is located in an emergent tree 115 feet above the forest floor. From the Platform, you have the opportunity to view the rain forest from a seldom-seen perspective. White hawks, Howler monkeys, Anole lizards and Pygmy squirrels may be sighted. The rest of the day you are free to hike on your own, enjoy the beach or just relax in a hammock tied to a palm tree a few feet from the Pacific Ocean. Meals and overnight at Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp. (BLD)(PG)
After breakfast start off on the 6 hour round trip hike through the park to Salsipuedes (Leave if You Can) Bay. Corcovado National Park covers 136,347 acres and is considered to be the most biologically diverse rain forests in Central America. Walking northwest you pass through primary and secondary forests, a small stretch of mangrove and stretches of beach. This walk is renown for siting large flocks of scarlet macaws of 20 or more individuals feeding in almond trees. While by no means probable, it is possible to see tapir at Salsipuedes. Many of our guests have had this thrilling reward for this strenuous hike. Overnight at Corcovado Lodge Tent Camp. (BLD)(CG)
DAY 7-Corcovado / San José / Pacuare
Walk 30-45 minutes to the Carate airstrip with a Corcovado Guide. (Luggage will be transported by the horse cart) for the 1-hour flight to San José. The time of our flight from Carate to San José will depend on the ocean tide. Given that the walk from Corcovado Lodge to Carate and vice versa must be on the beach, if we are within two hours on either side of the high tide time, it can be difficult going as the waves will be washing in over your feet. By programming our flights and walks to be either two hours before or two hours after the high tide we avoid this difficulty. Upon arrival in San José, your White Water Rafting Guides will be waiting to take you on the next leg of your adventure. After a quick change of luggage, you will depart San José heading east to Tres Equis where you will switch to a 4×4 shuttle which will take you to the put in on the Pacuare River. (Depending on the road conditions you may need to walk for less than 1 mile.) After an orientation and safety talk, proceed down river. River time: approximately 1-1/2 hours. Dinner and overnight camping on the river bank. (BLD)(CG)(RG)
The most beautiful river canyon in the tropics will bewitch the adventuresome beginner and the experienced rafter alike. The Pacuare River cuts through one of the rare pockets of wilderness left on the planet. Today you will wake to the sounds of the Pacuare river canyon, and the smells of your river guides delicious cooking. After an early morning breakfast you will go on a 2-hour hike with one of your guides. Upon your return to camp the rafts will be rigged and ready to continue your adventure down the Pacuare River to take out. River time: approximately 4 hours. Mid-afternoon take out. Return to San José (two hours driving time). This evening the group will get together for what we hope will not be the last time. At tonight’s farewell dinner we will have the first session of recapping the Unforgettable Memories of our trip. Overnight at San José hotel. (BL)(RG)
