Kalimantan – Orangutan Wildlife and Adventure
Featuring: Borneo, long thought to be a remote and exotic destination, is today visited with comparative ease. Adventurers to the southern half of Borneo will find Kalimantan, a land of diamond mines, mosques, floating markets and orchid forests.
Kalimantan is laced with waterways which weave through its jungles. Adventurers may travel rivers and tributaries by riverboat, houseboat, dugout canoe or bamboo raft into the jungle where they will find abundant wildlife, including the orangutan. Kalimantan is a land of lush rainforests, fascinating Dayak culture, and exquisite flora, including the rare black orchid.

Upon your arrival at the airport at the Pangkalan Bun Airport a representative will meet you and take you to Kumai Harbor. You’ll then proceed on a comfortable and traditional 2 hour boat ride up the Sekonyer River to the Rimba Lodge. The lodge is a beautiful riverside accommodation where you may take a ride on a dugout canoe and watch a variety of birds, Proboscis Monkeys, macques, gibbons, and other wonderful creatures of Borneo. Later you will visit Tanjung Harapan, the rehabilitation center for orphaned orangutans. Lunch is included and dinner and overnight provided at the romantic lodge.
After breakfast proceed on a 2 hour boat ride up the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey, a research and rehabilitation center for orangutans. You will also enjoy a trek through the tropical rainforest and search for wild orangutans, exotic plants and other primates. That afternoon you will return to the camp to observe feeding time for the orangutans. Later that afternoon you will also visit Pondok Tanguy, a new rehabilitation center and then spend the night at the Pondok Tanguy Pier. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
After waking to an orchestra of birds and breakfast you will travel to the Aspai Gold mine, where ancient techniques are still used by the miners. You will then proceed to Natai Lengkuas at the Tanjung Puting National Park, to observe scientists and there research of the Proboscis Monkey. Next you’ll be served tea and lunch as you sail down the river to Kumai Harbor, while animals play and bathe along the banks. A representative will meet you in Kamai and drive you to Pangkalan Bun for dinner and an overnight stay.
In the early morning you will embark through the rivulets of the Lamandau River to Tapinbini where you’ll tour the village and climb its hills for a magnificent view of their fields. Dinner will be served at the village followed by a traditional dance called the Bagondang. You can participate in the dance and after the festivities, you’ll spend the night at a villagers house.
This morning you will sail by longboat on the river rapids to Bolao Hill, where you trek for several hours through the rainforest to reach the hill’s peak. On the way local guides will point out medicinal and poisonous plants and take you to Batu Batungkat, a monumental stone believed by the Dayaks to possess magical powers. After continuing down the hill you will lunch at a local restaurant and may bathe in the river. The local Dayaks will be present to talk about their culture and narrate stories about the head hunting age. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
After breakfast your journey takes you down the Lamandau River to Pangkalan Bun, stopping at a riverside village for lunch. You’ll check into your hotel upon arrival and in the evening the guide team will join you for a farewell dinner.
A representative will accompany you to the airport for your departing flight.
