Sumatra – White Water Rafting on the Alas River

Featuring: The third largest island in the Indonesian Archipelago, Sumatra is rich in natural beauty and culture. The landscape is diverse with sprawling plantations, terraced rice fields and rugged mountains.

Some highlights are Lake Toba, one of the deepest volcanic lakes in the world, and Bukit Lawang where the orangutan rehabilitation center is located. Sumatra is a prime destination for jungle treks and river rafting. The breakers around Nias Island attract surfers.

Length: 6 Days / 5 Nights

Itinerary Highlights:

DAY 1-Medan to Berastagi
Upon your arrival in Medan, your guide will meet you and lead you on a two hour trip to the highlands of Berastagi where you will stay at the Bukit Kubu Hotel. The Bukit Kubu is a beautifully preserved colonial mansion once occupied by past governors. Lunch will be served during your trip and dinner upon your arrival to Berastagi.

DAY 2-Berastagi to the Alas River
In the morning you’ll travel west on an air-conditioned bus to the Alas River. After lunch at an Indonesian restaurant, you’ll raft on Sumatra’s network of rivers down to Gunung Leuseur National Park. The park covers 850,000 hectares of rainforest ecosystems where you may catch sight of orangutans, tigers, exotic birds and other primates. At a beach bordering the rainforest you’ll set up camp for the night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.

DAY 3
A full day adventure down the mild rapids gives you the opportunity to observe the exotic wildlife. You will also float through the Fantastic Gorge, experiencing the canyon’s amphitheater of rainforest sights and sounds. Where the Alas and Renun rivers converge you will set up camp for the evening and enjoy a candle lit dinner of wines, hors d’oeuvres and Indonesian cuisine prepared over the campfire. Breakfast and lunch are also provided.

DAY 4-Alas River
Awaking to the chirps of the gibbon bird, you’ll have the rest of the day to embark on various activities. You may bathe in one of the waterfalls, examine the limestone canyon cliffs or trek through the rainforest to catch a glimpse of the native orangutans. For this last night you will camp on a beach of the lowland plains along the Indian Ocean. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

DAY 5-Alas River to Medan
After breakfast you will embark on a motor boat to Gelombang, where you’ll board a minibus to Medan. The bus travels along high mountain roads offering unique perspectives of the sprawling rainforest. Lunch will be provided along the way and after checking in to the Bukit Kubu you will be free to arrange your own dinner reservations at one of the local restaurants.

DAY 6- Medan
A representative will accompany you to the airport for your departing flight.
