Maldives
The word atoll is the only Maldivi word that has entered the English language. Fittingly, it sums up the natural wonder that forms the very firmament of this island country. The Maldives are made up of 26 atolls, or ring-like coral formations that, having gradually built over thousands of years, form the very ground of a beautiful and delicate tropical paradise.
It is on the Maldives that the tourist can live the Robinson Crusoe Experience, relaxing under a swaying palm tree, gazing out at the azure sea. Each island resort has its own feel, with hospitality varying from up-scale hotels to thatch-roof bungalows on the sand. Some resorts offer peace and tranquility; others offer water sports for the thrill-seeker in all of us. The two activities that no visitor should miss, however, are the snorkeling and the scuba diving. What could be better than diving in an island nation built entirely of coral?
