Costa Rica: Monteverde Resorts
Features: The North Pacific waters offers varied and plentiful marine life, such as many schools of small colorful tropical fish, jacks, barracudas, eagle rays,white-tip reef sharks, manta rays and bull sharks.
Dives are generally off pinnacle rock formations at 40 to 80 foot depths. Visibility can vary from 20 to 80 feet in the same day due to plankton and marine organism that thrive in the warm waters. Because of the plankton-rich waters, Costa Rica is famous for drawing large pelagic marine animals.
Continuously active since 1968, Arenal Volcano towers far above the northern plains overlooking a beautiful lake and pristine cloud forests reserves. The degree of volcanic activity varies from week to week. Sometimes visitors see a breathtaking display of red hot lava and rocks flying through the air; at other times the Volcano lapses into a phosphorescent glow. Tabacon Hot Springs
The Tabacon River flows through lush ecological gardens, forming natural hot mineral water pools and waterfalls. The hot springs are set in exquisite tropical landscaping making an idyllic setting where guests can wade in waters beneath a jungle waterfall. Visitors wishing to enjoy the therapeutic qualities of these waters can choose from 10 pools, offering different options. Temperatures range from 23 to 40 C (73 to 104 F).
Optional activities include horseback riding or hiking through the rich rain forest, canoing, kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing on the lakes or rafting on the Corobici River.
The Monteverde Lodge
Located in the Tilaran mountain range at 4,600 ft above sea level, this upscale lodge has large comfortable rooms with forest views. With an attractive lobby and landscaped gardens, this is an eco-friendly resort. Approx cost: $100 per night.
El Sapo Dorado
El Sapo Dorado has 20 mountain suites nestled in a pastoral setting providing spacious, comfortable accommodations just minutes from the Monteverde Cloud Forest and other natural attractions. The Sunset Terrace Suites offer spectacular views of the Gulf of Nicoya. Some suites have refrigerators and fireplaces and most suites accommodate up to four guests. Approximately cost: $80 per night.
Arenal Lodge, located in the San Carlos area 3 1/2 hours driving time from San José, overlooks Lake Arenal and has an excellent view of the active Arenal Volcano. The lodge has 6 standard rooms, 12 junior suites, and 1 large master suite. Only the suites have a view of the Volcano. Located just above the main building are 10 chalets with views of the lake and Volcano. The lodge offers complimentary transfer to Tabacon Hot Springs.
Tabacon Resort and Spa
This resort is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano east of the Arenal Lake. It borders the Arenal National Park which is exceptionally rich in biodiversity. This elegant resort offers many amenities including air conditioning, television, private terraces overlooking the Volcano and full spa services with massage and mud masks. Approximately $90 per night.
Lake Coter Eco Lodge
Situated in the Guanacaste Mountain Range next to the famous heart -shaped Coter Lake, Lake Coter Eco Lodge has rooms with private bathrooms and cabins that sit high on a hill overlooking Lake Arenal. A fully equipped marina and an excellent supply of equipment allows guests to enjoy hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, water sports at Coter Lake, windsurfing, fishing and exploring the Arenal Volcano, which is located close by.
